Former Miami-Dade County Public Schools and current FIU employee Martha just wanted to “help a youth stay on track.” Seven years later, she’s done that and much more. As a Big Sister to her Little Sister Janelly, Martha has been a consistent presence in Janelly’s life to support her through her transition into college and adulthood.
“I helped Janelly apply to college,” says Martha. ”It was very special to me to support her during this process, considering she is the first person in her family to attend college.”
Janelly’s mother enrolled her in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami to expose her to the community after relocating from Nicaragua. After she was matched with Big Sister Martha in 2012, Janelly was able to build her self-confidence and a desire to pursue long-term goals. Janelly’s mother credits Martha with her daughter’s desire to get a college degree and create a career for herself.
Janelly now attends Miami-Dade College and is pursuing a degree in criminal justice to one day become an investigator. Martha still involves Janelly in any opportunity that she can find. Even after becoming a mother to a baby boy, Martha’s sisterly bond with Janelly hasn’t changed—she continues to make time to be a mentor and keep in touch weekly.
